Most significantly, Google has announced a 40 million dollar investment in tech from Fossil, and has acquired part of their R&D team. Daniel Bader is joined this week by Carolina Milanesi, an Analyst for Creative Strategies. During their one-on-one conversation, they place a light on the broader smartphone market in relation to Apple — especially as it relates to Apple's poor performance in mainland China. Apple is no longer the benchmark against which all others are judged. Many players have emerged as smartphones have transitioned from to luxury to commodity items. Additionally, ecosystem lock-in diminishes in value due to features/services that are geographically restricted. They also talk about Samsung, AKA the "Apple of the Android World" and what's happening with them around the world. Finally, they look at what you should (and should not) expect for CES. Daniel Bader, Andrew Martonik, and Russell Holly are here for the penultimate episode of the show for 2018! AT&T has officially launched their 5G network — albeit in portions of only 12 markets. T-Mobile's John Legere has chimed in with plenty of snark, but maybe he should keep his opinion to himself for once. Facebook continues to rationalize their insidious disregard for user data. They gave unfettered access to Microsoft, Amazon, and Netflix. Meanwhile, Sundar Pichai schooled Congress on exactly what Google does (and does not do) with regard to user data and perceived bias in search results. Daniel Bader, Andrew Martonik, Jerry Hildenbrand, and Hayato Huseman are here with a cornucopia of Android news. First up, they address solutions to some common problems with Pixel 3 that have been vexing early adopters, and its lack of face unlock as a missed opportunity to set an example for OEMs to follow. Jerry shares his expertise on the USB-C spec, and how the new iPad Pro will drive demand for more, and better quality peripherals from all manufacturers — and benefiting all users in the process. Hayato reviews the new Palm phone. It's certainly tiny. And as a device running full Android 8, it CAN do more than the minimal amount of tasks it's intended for. But does it actually help someone achieve improved digital wellness? Lastly, the discussion turns to the announcements from Samsung's developer conference, particularly Samsung's Android 9 Pie interface called 'One UI', and their Infinity Flex Display technology. Daniel Bader, Andrew Martonik, and Russell Holly convene once again via a series of tubes to discuss lots of hot topics in Android news. First, Epic Games is bypassing the Google Play Store for the upcoming Android release of Fortnite — requiring users to side-load the game and pay for in-app purchases directly to Epic. Next, Android P finally has a name: Android 9 Pie! While not as catchy as 'petit four' or 'pumpkin spice latte', it's less controversial than the great 'New-git/New-gah' wars of 2016. Samsung Galaxy Note 9? Never heard of it. But the Galaxy Tab S4 is here; with high end specs, build quality, and a price tag to match. A full review is still forthcoming, but comparisons to iPad and Chromebooks are plentiful. In the home stretch, Moto Z3 is officially coming to Verizon on August 16th. A modest update to the OnePlus 5, the 5T is marketed as a $499 flagship. It may not fully compete with phones like the Galaxy S8 and Pixel 2, but the price is far more accessible. They also discuss the enthusiast community’s disappointment with the Razer Phone and Daniel’s impressions of iPhone X. To wrap things up, Andrew gives us the skinny on Google’s Pixel Buds. Alex Dobie takes center stage this week as he, Daniel Bader, Andrew Martonik, and Jerry Hildenbrand talk about his hands-on experience with some recently announced devices: the Razer Phone and HTC’s U11+.
Razer’s maiden voyage into the smartphone market is targeted towards gamers. With a unique 120Hz display, 8GB of RAM, and a huge 4,000mAh battery, it offers an opportunity for high frame rates on a mobile device. But can the Android gaming experience really take advantage of its potential? And how satisfactory of a phone is it in other respects?
The HTC U11+ has a lot going for it from a hardware perspective. On the software side of things, it includes Android Oreo and HTC sense. But there’s a catch—HTC currently has no launch plans for the U.S., and there are no British carriers for it in the UK. In a market with so many excellent, readily available phones, how can this dark horse contender gain any mindshare with consumers?

It’s a full house this week on the show, but Daniel Bader, Alex Dobie, Andrew Martonik, Jerry Hildenbrand, and Russell Holly deliver a tight 70 minutes of insight into Google’s Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL. Is the display on the XL as bad as some reviewers have said, or are expectations out of whack because the screens on recent Samsung phones are just so good? One thing is certain—the FUD machine is running at full throttle.
The crew also talk about the usefulness of the squeeze function as well as the design, materials, and components used by Google. Alex also delivers a taste of what’s to come with the Huawei Mate 10. There will be two different versions of the phone. At this point it’s unclear which ones will be available where, but we do know that Huawei’s SoC is a monster!

Your privacy and personal data are a major topic this week as Daniel Bader, Andrew Martonik , and Jerry Hildenbrand talk about Google’s quick decision to disable touch-activated listening on the Home Mini before it becomes available to consumers. OnePlus is taking some heat once again; this time for data collection concerns regarding OxygenOS.
On a more positive note, Google is adding Duo video calling to the dialer and SMS app on Pixel, Nexus, and Android One phones. Also, Disney has partnered with other major studios, excluding Paramount (at least for now), to offer Movies Anywhere—a service that lets you more freely access movies you’ve purchased from multiple platforms.
The crew also discuss using Pixel 2 on Project Fi, and whether or not it’s a good decision to buy an original Pixel in 2017.

Daniel Bader, Jerry Hildenbrand, Russell Holly, and Andrew Martonik convene for a detailed breakdown of all the announcements from Google’s Pixel hardware event this week.
They get the bezel bashing out of the way quickly before moving on to Google’s Home Mini and Home Max, followed by a look at the Pixelbook. Besides Jerry, who is the target audience for Chrome OS on such a high end piece of hardware? Are the specs simply overkill for what can be accomplished on the device? It’s a computer that’s far more capable than your might think.
The second half of the episode is devoted to Pixel 2 as the crew discuss the specs, colors, and features of each model. The camera is a major change from the original Pixel. It bucks the recent trend of dual cameras by offering a single rear facing camera. They also talk about the Pixel Buds and their potential usefulness for translation. All that, and much more!

Daniel Bader, Jerry Hildenbrand, Russell Holly, and Phil Nickinson talk about the motives and strategies behind some significant moves in the industry this year, including Google’s HTC deal and Amazon’s new Echo products and Fire TV 4K.
It’s update-mageddon! With Google extending security updates for Nexus 5X and 6P, and the Moto X Pure Edition just now getting Android 7.0, what can users reasonably expect from manufacturers in the way of support for devices they already own?
Finally, the Pixel 2 only days away—Google is offering up to $410 back when trading in your original Pixel through the Google Store. Now might be a good time to get on it!

This week, we invited our homebody friends, Mikah Sargent and Phil Nickinson, to chat about smart homes and how they're changing the way we live. Should you buy a Google Home or an Echo or, if you're into Apple, should you wait for the HomePod, which is hatching later this year? And what about ecosystems and standards? What *is* a Zigbee, anyway? All of these questions are answered — or at least acknowledged — and more! |

This week, Daniel, Flo, Alex and Jerry discuss the latest Pixel 2 rumors — will it be made by HTC, LG or both? — and what that means for the future of the Pixel program. Also discussed: - HTC did good with the U11 - Apple's WWDC announcements: Is the iPad the best Google tablet around? - Bixby sucks. When will it be good? - The OnePlus 5 is coming, but is it a lot of hot air? - Locked phones will be banned in Canada this year. How does that change things, and how does it compare to other countries like the U.S. and the UK? |

This week, it's Daniel, Jerry, and Alex tackling HTC U 11, OnePlus 5, and Google I/O, plus some surprises (and one bad joke) along the way. Stick around! It's not an under-11 soccer team or a Nazi submarine, but a new phone. The HTC U 11 is coming soon, and while we don't know much about it, we do know that it will try to bridge the gap between the HTC 10, an underrated phone, and the U series that began earlier this year with the U Ultra and U Play. The OnePlus 5 is probably going to be one of the most exciting releases of the year, but with component prices increasing rapidly, can OnePlus maintain its "affordable flagship" tagline? And Google I/O is next week! The guys break down what to expect, and what they want, from Google's annual developer conference! This week, your hosts Daniel Bader, Jerry Hildenbrand and Andrew Martonik talk about what's new in the world of smartphones, and the regulators that influence the carriers we pay to get cellular service for those phones. 1. Andrew gives his thoughts on the Samsung Galaxy S8, and the team talk about whether the new phone is a foundational phone that has problems — more like the Galaxy S6 than the Galaxy S7. 2. The BlackBerry KEYone is coming soon, but who is this phone for, and should you care? Daniel and Jerry give their thoughts. 3. The FCC is moving to repeal Title II, removing specific clauses from so-called net neutrality mandates that protect consumers from having "fast lanes" imposed on the internet. This is a big deal. 4. AT&T launched a "5G Evolution" network this week, but it's more of the same — both in terms of technology (nothing new) and deceptive marketing (same old, same old). Why did Samsung ship Bixby half-finished, and was the oft-criticized fingerprint sensor going to be somewhere else until a last-minute change forced Samsung's hand? Fri, 17 March 2017
This week, Daniel, Russell, Jerry and Andrew tell the tale of three phones, each with different prospects for the worldwide handset market. The LG G6 is coming soon, and it's a known quantity. With three weeks between its released (April 7) and the Galaxy S8 (April 28), what does LG need in order to capitalize on that gap? And will giving away free Google Homes and big-screen TVs make a difference in the long run? And then there's the Galaxy S8 itself, which has a lot going for it but the unknowns are still plentiful. From the removal of the famous front home button to the busy sensor panel above the Super AMOLED display, Samsung seems to be courting a fair amount of controversy — and the phone hasn't even been announced! Finally, HTC's U Ultra is kind of DOA, but it's also an example of how HTC, even in its diminished state, never stops striving for that premium spot in the market. Oh, and Russell needs a plumber. Anyone know one? |

This week, Andrew, Daniel and Alex get the buying season started early with their favorite gear gifts at any price point. Plus, the OnePlus 3T is now official, but why does it exist, and what does that mean for the popular and still-great OnePlus 3? And the Galaxy S7 is getting a beta version of Nougat in some countries, but when will it roll out to the rest of us? Qualcomm unveiled the Snapdragon 835 alongside Quick Charge 4.0, too, and there's a lot of excitement around the new 10nm manufacturing process. Finally, Samsung is selling the Galaxy Note 3 refurbished this Black Friday, but the team thinks this is a very bad idea. |

In this episode, Alex, Andrew, Jerry and Daniel talk about the post-Pixel releases of the year: Google Home, Chromecast Ultra, Daydream, and the new (and improved) Android Auto! There's so much to like, but many of the feature feel like half-measures. Also, Nougat is on the verge of getting released broadly, other than the Pixel and a couple recent phones you won't find it beyond beta. Finally, the Mate 9 is coming soon, but did Huawei do enough to make EMUI usable? Oh, and the HTC Bolt — a Sprint exclusive, but also a good indication of HTC's carrier-focused future. |
Thu, 3 November 2016
This week, Alex, Daniel and special guest, MrMobile himself Michael Fisher, talk about Huawei's massive-in-a-few-ways new flagship, the Mate 9. Fri, 30 September 2016
This week, Alex, Jerry, Daniel, and Flo talk about the Google event happening on October 4, and how Google's Pixel phones need something truly special to make a mark on the industry in ways the Nexuses never could. And BlackBerry is no longer making its own phones. Is that a big deal when the company pledged years ago to be a software company first? Finally, Android Wear 2.0 has been delayed. Boo! But its scope is much bigger than when it first debuted earlier this year, so when smartwatches finally are released with it, we'll actually have some pretty cool new stuff to look forward to. |
Fri, 23 September 2016
In episode 307, Andrew, Jerry, and Daniel chat about Allo, Google's smart, AI-powered messaging app. After so much hype, does it live up to our lofty expectations, and how does Google capitalize on its ambitious bot strategy? Plus, replacement Note 7s are here, and with it the "safe" green battery icon. But will it make a difference to Samsung's battered reputation? And the new Xperia X Compact is one of the best small phones on the market, but what's with its $499 price? Come on, Sony. Finally, Jerry walks us through the things to look for when buying a pair of Bluetooth headphones. |
Sun, 18 September 2016

Also, what the heck is going on with Android Wear right now? It kind of feels like it's in a holding pattern.
